A path into mist.
A road without a bottom.
Then, when you think you’ve absorbed all the details, you find those two people waaaaaaayyyy up on the cables.
And I wonder —- why are they there? Practical reasons, or the preposterous? Noble or wicked? What do they see from that height?
You’re the writer. You’ve got 150 words. How will you spend them?

“I choose him”
“What? That scrawny fellow? Why not wait for a better suitor”
“He’s the first person we’ve seen in fourteen years, dear.”
“Even more the reason to keep looking. You can’t just pick the first human you see.”
“I have a feeling about this one, and you know – ”
“Your feeling is never wrong. I know, I know, but what are you going to tell him?”
“The truth.”
“All of it?”
“In due time.”
“So how are we going to introduce ourselves?”
“As messengers.”
“And our message?”
“Someone has to rebuild this world.”

This is a powerful image… My mind started to tinker the second I saw it

I am so glad!! I’ve been missing you at the VisDare water cooler. π

I love this image and my mind went in the direction I first imagined, just disappointed I couldn’t get the story ending line to my satisfaction.
I have missed writing SO much. I’ve been through the worst emotional turmoil in a long while and I also developed total writer’s block failure for a number of months too.
But, alas, things are on the up and I can once again look forward to the challenge of writing.
It’s good to see your followers have increased (I’ve noticed it over time)… VisDare is pretty cool!!
Thanks for the reply! π

This I remember from taking Engineering classes… and I immediately recognized the Tacoma bridge.. the Video of when it breaks is even scarier

WOAH. That is scary, but also cool that they got all that on film. My dad is an engineer and is teaching a high school calculus class – he needs to show this to his students. Thanks for posting!!!

Indeed.. it was shown as an example of what bad engineering can lead to π

“I do have an underlying core of sensibleness you know!”
Siwan shot her companion a look of disdain.
Alex frowned. “Is there such a word as sensibleness?
Siwan’s look intensified. His question went unanswered.
“There must be another way. We’ve never tested it. Not properly”. The vulnerability showed in her eyes.
He ignored the desire to give her a hug.
“Yes we have! Well…maybe not properly, properly”. He scratched his head, a tiny chink of doubt trying to push its way in.
“It’s fine. Totally safe”. He gave a reassuring grin.
“So you do it then”. Her eyes were pleading.
He shook his head.
“I have to watch. Observe. Sorry.”
She nodded. “Ok then. Let’s do it. Before I change my mind”.
With a deep breath, he pushed the button and his shiny new invention, with Siwan inside, went flying across the open span, where the bridge had once been.

Nice work! I particularly like the interplay between Alex and Siwan (which, how do you pronounce?).

Thank you! My first ever effort at writing anything! Siwan is the Welsh equivalent of Susan I believe. It’s pronounced Shoo-un. X

Deftly done π Interest piqued, sympathy engaged, to allow one trembling instant of doubt to unfurl into an endless moment of joyous hope.
